Farmers Market Smoothie
Gluten-Free, Vegetarian, Vegan (Dairy & Casein Free), under 16 grams of carbs

I call this the Farmers Market Smoothie because you can use whatever is fresh at your local market, or at home. Simply substitute berries for berries, stone fruit for stone fruit, herbs for herbs, ect. ect. (use about 1/4 cup per berry).  I wouldn't, however, sub full grown spinach for baby spinach. Baby spinach has a sweeter and much more mild flavor than it's more mature counterpart.

Oh, I track my food in the Livestrong.com website, which indicates that 1-serving is: 117 calories, 1.37 grams of fat (from the avocado), 15.03 grams of carbs, and 13.64 grams of protein. This list of values will vary based on the protein powder you use. My protein powder (biochem whey isolate, natural flavor) contributes 40 calories, 0.5 gram of carbs and 10 grams of protein, to each serving of this smoothie. You can simply subtract these values from the totals I provided and then add in the values for your protein powder.

Yield: 2 smoothies

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz Water
  • 1 serving of your favorite protein powder (I use egg white protein powder, or whey isolate, or brown rice protein powder - look for products that are not sweetened)
  • 1 tsp sweet clover sprouts (or just pinch off a bit with you fingers)
  • 1/4 medium peach
  • 4 fresh strawberries
  • 8 fresh blackberries
  • 8 fresh green grapes
  • 1 leaf of fresh mint
  • 1 fresh basil leaf
  • 1 thin slice of fresh Lemon (include the peel)
  • 1 tbl fresh avocado
  • 1 cup (or handful) of fresh baby spinach
  • 1/2 cup of ice

  • Tips for Smoothie Success:

  • Toss all ingredients into the blender in the order listed.  Be sure to let the blender run for a good 30 - 45 seconds

  • Start with all of the ingredients being cold, clean and fresh from the fridge

  • Use ripe or slightly over ripe fruits
